Our college’s greatest strength is that faculty believe that basic skills is ALL of our responsibilities. We have begun a pilot program integrating basic skills courses with counseling and supplemental instruction (tutoring).
We are weak in student assessment tied to placement. We are also currently facing the challenge–the fear– of scaling up our current project.

Moorpark College excels in the area of campus culture–faculty, student services, administration– all embracing basic skills as an integral part of their mission. All faculty view basic skills students as THEIR students. All services strive to partner with faculty in improving success for these students. Administrators are supportive of these efforts. As a result, we have piloted a program for developmental math and English to have an integrated component of counseling support and supplemental instruction.
Where we struggle is in accurately placing students in courses that are the best matches for their needs. We hope to improve this through a more directive version of our self-placement tests, and through a campus wide discussion of assessment and placement.
